Biodiversity

Creating and protecting healthy ecosystems in the Manawatū River catchment.
Biodiversity protection and enhancement focuses on preserving and restoring the natural environment in our region.
Our network in this area, including the Manawatū River Source to Sea (S2S), is working together to improve the health of the Manawatū River catchment—the area of land where rainwater and streams flow into the Manawatū River. We aim to protect and increase native birds, insects, and plants, while also improving the river's water quality.

Key initiatives

Biodiversity
Manawatū Trees for Survival
We deliver the Trees for Survival programme across the Manawatū, giving students hands-on environmental learning. Students grow native trees from seedlings at school and then plant them out along local waterways. This restores habitat, improves water quality and boosts biodiversity for generations to come. We work alongside Rotary, Horizons Regional Council, Palmerston North City Council, Awapuni Nursery, Menzshed Manawatū and the Ahimate Reserve community.

Biodiversity
Manawatū River Source to Sea
Manawatū River Source to Sea is a connected network of biodiversity projects working together for the health of the Manawatū River, from the Ruahine and Tararua ranges to the coast. Led by ENM, it brings together community groups, farmers, councils and the Department of Conservation to restore biodiversity and grow sustainable, nature-based experiences across the catchment.

Southern Ruahine Kiwi
Southern Ruahine Kiwi (SRK) is working to restore native forest in the southern Ruahine Ranges and bring kiwi back to an area where they haven't lived for more than 50 years. We work alongside Save the Kiwi, DOC, Horizons, tangata whenua and landowners on large-scale predator control, with North Island Brown Kiwi as the first species to return. SRK is partnering with ENM to become an independent charitable trust that reflects the aspirations of tangata whenua.

Our voice at the table

As the region's sector-lead environmental organisation, ENM has a responsibility to advocate for biodiversity at a local and regional level. That means making submissions on relevant policy proposals, feeding community perspectives to council and government, and ensuring that climate considerations are part of the conversations shaping Manawatū's future.

We work with our member organisations and the wider community to develop and amplify submissions, so that the voices of people who care about climate in the Manawatū are heard where decisions are made.
